Staniel Cay

Staniel Cay

Staniel Cay

“The Staniel Cay is the diamond pendant in the sparkling necklace of the Exumas.” It is a small island in the Exuma chain of islands, located roughly 75 miles south of Nassau. This beautiful cay was established in 1783 when the American loyalists settled in the archipelago of the Exumas. White sandy beaches stretch as far as the eye can see, and while visiting Staniel Cay don’t expect it to be any different. The island is surrounded by coral reefs while the shallow banks to its west side boast sea gardens, anchorages, coral heads and a number of spots for water sporting activities, making it one of the most popular yachting destinations in the Bahamas Islands.

Staniel Cay is the cruising headquarters for the Exumas. The island's beautiful uncrowded beaches and crystal clear waters offer excellent swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling, and kayaking opportunities. It is also a great location for deep-sea fishing. The island is perhaps best known for “Thunderball Grotto” - an underwater cave system. Staniel Cay is just a few minutes by boat to Thunderball Grotto. The grotto got its name from the 1965 James Bond movie "Thunderball," which was filmed here. This fantastic cave system is brimming with exotic marine life such as yellow-tail snappers, Angel fish, and Sergeant Majors to name a few. The grotto is also one of the most outstanding snorkeling locations of the entire Bahamas.
